Why the Most Important Number in your Business is 7,000!

Updated: Feb 20

Something wonderful is about to happen in your business or your job! Knowing this information will shift your perspective on what it means to be successful!

There are many numbers you need to know at work, if you own your own business I would argue there are even more you need to be aware of, but the number one that should be on your radar, probably is not!

The tracking of this number is easy and you are already probably doing it, without awareness. STEPS per day!!

Shocking I know, but hear me out here! Activity or steps per day is a measure of health, and one of the greatest predictors of dis-ease, obesity, depression, anxiety and overwhelm. If you are feeling any of those things.......listen up....... Being "active" is the new measure of having it all. So along with all the other personal habits that we use to measure success, get healthy, be more focused and live longer, healthier lives, this number is the one to know, strive for and be measuring for yourself.

Low active is 5,000 to 7,499 steps per day. Somewhat active is 7,500 to 9,999 steps per day. Active is more than 10,000 steps per day. Highly active is more than 12,500.

Where do you fall on this scale? What if I told you, that with the 1000s of clients I have worked with over the last 14 years, and even before that in my career in healthcare, the people who were active or highly active, where more successful financially, mentally, socially and physically!

Let's look at the cognitive benefits......increased focus and concentration with as little as a 10% improvement in physical movement. You could try setting a notification to get up every 30 -40 minutes and walk to the water cooler and back, personally I get up and do 10 squats and a plank for 1 min! Even better try a standing desk.......when I switched I went from 6-8 inactive hours per day to 1-2. Just standing at your desk can have you moving up to 5000 steps while at work or in those never ending zoom meetings......if you are off camera you can even move around more! OK once I forgot to turn off the camera and I was doing squats......but hey.....I was losing focus and wanted to bring my mind back to the meeting and movement is the best way to do that!

Where Did the 10,000 Steps Recommendation Originate?
Epidemiologist I-Min Lee and her colleagues found that in 1965, the Yamasa Clock and Instrument Company in Japanese named their new pedometer the Manpo-kei, which means “10,000 steps meter,” as a means to market the new tool. However, that number became the gold standard for exercise without any scientific backing.

Movement is awesome. In fact, it’s so old-school popular in helping thinkers think that our greek friends even had a Latin phrase to capture its power: Solvitur ambulando. <- “It is solved by walking.”

Nietzsche would agree. He said: “All truly great thoughts are conceived by walking.”

Kierkegaard would agree. He put it this way: “I have walked myself into my best thoughts.”

Then we have Immanuel Kant. He was so consistent with his daily walks that his neighbors could set their clocks to the time he passed their houses. (They even named a street after him called “Philosopher’s Walk.”)

Then we have Charles Darwin. For nearly FORTY years he followed his schedule with “clockwork” precision. And, you know what made it on the schedule every day? His walk. He was so committed to it that he actually leased his neighbor’s land just so he could do a complete loop on what became known as Sandwalk (although he preferred to call it his “thinking path”).

Then there’s Aristotle. He and his followers walked so much as they thought and taught and philosophized that they were known as the “peripatetics”—which literally means “walking up and down.”

Of course, modern scientists have proven just how powerful walking is for creativity. (Especially in nature!) If ancient and modern philosophers agree: Movement is pretty powerful, why are you not moving more? Stop now and check your phone or Apple watch, how many steps so far today? Stand up now and stretch, touch the floor with your hands, do some lunges, squats or maybe even a couple jumping jacks........trouble with those? I have a great trainer I can recommend. But it's actually the mindset of movement that is the key to lifelong wellness, success, creativity and hint hint ........making more money!

Let's begin with the end of our day, week, month and life in mind. How do you want to feel?

Energized, vibrant, focused, committed, attractive, creative and so happy that others are drawn to your energy? Then move more!

The most successful people on the planet have morning routines, exercise is in their calendar, movement is part of their day and sometimes their meetings!

This is your wake up call to realize you are not special, you need this too! Along with the whole foods, more water, 7-9 hours of sleep and a mindset to move you to those clear targets!
